Even though, from the outside, both cables look quite similar they are drastically different internally. A instrument cable is based on a coaxial cable. A coax cable has internal braided or spiral copper shielding and the center of that there is a protected primary conductor wire. The primary instrument signal flows through the center conductor while the shielding protects the signal from any outside RF (Radio Frequencies) from entering the signal. A speaker cable typically has two thick wires connecting to the tip and sleeve of the 1/4" phono plug – one for positive and one for negative. There is typically no shielding in a speaker cable.
